Better Deal Diamonds
In the last decade the diamond industry has taken major steps to end the trade in the ‘Conflict’ or ‘Blood’ diamonds once used to fund civil wars in Africa. In many parts of the world however Diamond miners still live and work in conditions most of us in the U.K. would find intolerable.
Adrian Ashley is now producing a collection of diamond jewellery that only uses stones from licensed mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo that aim to help the miners and their families gain long term benefits from their hard work. A percentage of the profits from the diamond sales are reinvested to improve working conditions at the mines and fund community development initiatives, bringing a small amount of prosperity to one of Africa’s most deprived areas. In keeping with its ethical values the collection of jewellery is being cast in Birmingham’s historic jewellery Quarter where gold has been refined and reworked for hundreds of years. This insures as little new gold as possible has been mined to make the pieces and helps to protect the Jewellery Quarter’s own traditional way of life.
